We are back on the road again tomorrow to finish up the last leg of our trip. I hope my bike holds up. Marc doesn't seem to concerned about my derailler but I'd rather not go through the same break down I had coming into Kalamazoo. He's the one that will have to fix it, so if he's not concerned, I guess I'm not either!
We have a 75 mile ride tomorrow and then a 55 mile ride to Belleview, a suburb of Detroit. We are going to spend a day with our friends Scott and Kate before venturing off to Ontario.
Our route to Ontario is still a bit up in the air. About 2 weeks ago, we stumbled across some information on the web that threatened to change our original route plans. We discovered that the Ambassador Bridge (connects Detroit to Windsor, Ontario) and the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel both do not allow bicycle traffic. The only way across is to hire a taxi or have someone drive you. What a bummer!
It looks like our only other option is to head north to Marine City (about 50 miles from Detroit) to take a short ferry ride across the river. Don't really want to go 50 miles out of the way but it may be the only option.
Then its a couple nights in Ontario before we enter New York around Niagara Falls. We'll cross the top of New York along the Erie Canalway Trail (a bike trail spanning 120 miles or so) and then head up through the Adriondacks to Lake Placid and then Lake Champlain. We are staying with friends almost every second or third night.
With our trip completion date nearing, we booked our tickets for our flight home. We'll be arriving back in Colorado on August 5th. Hopefully we'll make it to Portland in time to rest a couple days and get our bikes shipped back home. We'd like to venture up to Arcadia National Park for a day or two (via car!), so hopefully we'll have the time.

Hearing about your last leg brings up lots of memories. Mark needs to ask his dad about our trips to Maine and the routes through Ontario, New York, New Hampshire and Lake Placid which we visited at least once. And your dad was stationed in Maine up in Caribou for a while!! You might consider meeting the one great-aunt who lives in Lewiston--Aunt Pauline. I don't know her last name since she got married. My adopted kids are also both in Maine. I have loved reading your blog!!! Might be nice to hear after you get home what you learned on such a trek!!
