The final leg of our route from MIchigan to Maine

My husband, Marc, and I are embarking on a 65+ day bike powered journey across the Northern Tier of our great country. This is our first bike touring trip and we are going it alone - just the two of us, a tent and a credit card (well a few other essentials as well.)

I've created this blog to chronicle the ins and outs of our transcontinental bike tour along with highlights of the nation's best and worst slices of pie. Inspired by my love of the Food Network's travel shows...I've added the challenge of seeking out new and exciting flavors of pie. My goal - a different kind of pie every day and yes moon pie, pizza pie and anything else with a crust counts!

Day Two - Stevens Pass Climb / Gold Bar to Leavenworth

Its 8 PM and Marc is asleep already... that about sums up our ride. It was a tough day. At least we did not have any rain (well at least not any downpouring rain - a few sprinkles here and there.)

We left Gold Bar around 8 AM. Two miles into the trip I heard a loud pop and swoosh - well that was my tire. I ran over something bad and totally killed my back tire. Marc, the sweetheart that he is, came back and fixed it for me. Then at mile 25 or so, Marc had the same problem. He ran over some glass and had a flat as well. We were off to a slow start to a long climb.

Today our ride took us up to Stevens Pass in the Cascades. It was a long almost 4000 ft climb. Never too steep yet just too long - 35 miles of a steady uphill and then 37 miles of not so steady downhill for a total of 72 miles logged. And boy was it cold at the top. We rolled into the cute Bavarian town of Leavenworth at 5 PM. What a long day!

We soaked our weary feet in the hotel hot tub and then went in search of some grub. You'd think a Bavarian town like Leavenworth would have some type of pie. No such luck. We were starved so we settled on some pizza pie and boy was it good. It was a delicious Pepperoni, Sausage, Bacon, Mushroom and Black Olive Pizza from the Leavenworth Pizza Company. Yummy! The crust was perfectly thin and crispy with a thick coating of cheese and just the right mix of toppings. Now it could be my hunger speaking but I think it was one of the best pizza's I have ever had!

Leavenworth is an adorable Bavarian style village with lots of cute hotels and pubs. I wish we could stay an extra day as there are lots of neat things to explore. We will probably hit the bike shop in the morning as Marc's bike computer broke yesterday and we'll definitely hit the local bakery for a slice of breakfast pie (it was closed this evening.)

We just discovered that there is rain in the forecast for tomorrow - bummer. We may shorten our destination. We were supposed to go to Coulee City tomorrow but I'm thinking we'll stop short if the rain is bad. Looking forward to a good night's sleep. Thanks for checking in with us!
