The final leg of our route from MIchigan to Maine

My husband, Marc, and I are embarking on a 65+ day bike powered journey across the Northern Tier of our great country. This is our first bike touring trip and we are going it alone - just the two of us, a tent and a credit card (well a few other essentials as well.)

I've created this blog to chronicle the ins and outs of our transcontinental bike tour along with highlights of the nation's best and worst slices of pie. Inspired by my love of the Food Network's travel shows...I've added the challenge of seeking out new and exciting flavors of pie. My goal - a different kind of pie every day and yes moon pie, pizza pie and anything else with a crust counts!

Day Day 21: Rest Day - Badlands, Wall Drug, Mt Rushmore

If you think biking 100 miles a day is exhausting.... try spending a day with my three nephews. Today we locked up the bikes and loaded in the Pawlak motorcoach for the tour de jour with my sister, her husband, Dan, and their three young boys - Danny, 8, Jack, 5, and Clark, 2. People say biking is tough... try being in Val & Dan's shoes for a day. I'd take biking anyday.

We drove down to Wall to visit the famous Wall Drug Store - pretty cool - not worth all hype but neat. I had to have a slice of pie at the famous landmark so I chose a Coconut Cream Pie at the cafeteria. It was mediocre at best. I'm not a coffee drinker but I did enjoy a 5 cent cup of coffee!

After playing tourist at Wall Drug, we headed down to the Badlands. What a cool place! If you have never been, you must see the Badlands. Check out the cool pictures we took. As cool as it is, its really a nightmere for parents of small kids as there are cliffs and dropoffs everywhere. We ended up playing parents for most of the trip while corralling our nephews.

We spent hours enjoying the scenery and then headed back to the Black Hills to visit Mount Rushmore. We were hoping to see the monument at dark for the lighting ceremony at 9 PM. We arrived at 8 PM and mere minutes later the skies opened up and downpoured rain and hail. We were stuck in the visitor's center for almost an hour. I am now an walking encyclopedia of Mount Rushmore information. Did you know there is an actual Hall of Records located behind Lincoln's Head? ( I did not know this! I could also probably give you a play by play of the carving and other useless information.

We finally made it back to the campsite by 10 PM. Marc, Val and I were the only ones still awake. It was a fun rest day with my sister and her family. I miss seeing them more often.

  1. I really had a good laugh when you mentioned the Moo CD I used to play to wake up Julie and you. It made me search for my beloved sounds that both of you adored so much. It was not to be found, I will have to settle for some mp3 cow sounds. Thanks for the memories. We look forward to riding with you when you get close to Lake Geneva. We will introduce you to the Lake Geneva Pie company that our bike club uses.

  2. Sounds wonderful! Julie just told me about the pie company - yum! We are hoping to stay on schedule and to be riding thru the area on July 3 or so. (I know its a heavy traffic weekend - so perhaps you have a good less traveled route in mind.)
