The final leg of our route from MIchigan to Maine

My husband, Marc, and I are embarking on a 65+ day bike powered journey across the Northern Tier of our great country. This is our first bike touring trip and we are going it alone - just the two of us, a tent and a credit card (well a few other essentials as well.)

I've created this blog to chronicle the ins and outs of our transcontinental bike tour along with highlights of the nation's best and worst slices of pie. Inspired by my love of the Food Network's travel shows...I've added the challenge of seeking out new and exciting flavors of pie. My goal - a different kind of pie every day and yes moon pie, pizza pie and anything else with a crust counts!

Day 15: Big Timber, MT to Billings, MT

After a delicious breakfast at our B&B, we headed out for Billings around 10:30 AM. (We've got to get started earlier!) Our 80 mile ride today was fairly uneventful. We followed mainly frontage roads along the Yellowstone River. It was a beautiful ride, one of our best, through ranch lands and curvy river roads. The weather was perfect today - a nice, sunny day with a high temp of 78.

We skipped lunch today and opted for snaking along the ride. We did stop in the small town of Park City, MT for a few snacks. I was hot and wanted a refreshing treat so I got a nice Ice Cream Pie at the grocery store. A yummy vanilla ice cream pie with chocolate crust.

We arrived in Billings around 6 PM and finally found the downtown area. It's so cruel to advertise all the roadside motels on the far end of town. We were tempted to check into the Motel 6 that was right off the highway, but you get no flavor of the town that way. I am bound and determined to always find the local, mom & pop type motel in the downtown area.

Today we rode to the east end of Billings to the downtown area. I wanted to stay at the Dude Rancher Motel, but we couldn't find it - so bummed! We were tired of riding and ended up at the Big 5 Motel. A reasonably priced outdated motel in the heart of downtown. (May need to use the sleep sheets here - its a bit of a seedy place.)

After showering, we walked down to the Montana Brewing Company for dinner. I enjoyed a great flatbread pizza and salad while Marc had a double beef French Dip and an appetizer. (We were a bit hungry). The Brewing Company had a good Pale Ale that Marc enjoyed and I tried a few of the other varieties, including their Rye and Amber Ale.

Tomorrow we are undecided on our route. We will probably just do the 50 miles to Hardin, MT. We'd like to go at least another 20 miles but there are no hotels in between Hardin and Sheridan, WY. The route to Sheridan is 130 miles from Billings and probably too far to go in one day - unless there is a wicked tailwind. We'll see tomorrow.

  1. So, did you technically have TWO pies, since you had Ice Cream Pie AND Pizza Pie? I think I remember you saying Pizza would count :) I think maybe I enjoy hearing about all of the good food you guys get to eat most of all - makes me jealous (and hungry)!

  2. Hardin MT you say? Very cool. It's right in the middle of the Crow Indian Reservation. Note on Sheridan: it's going to be easier access to downtown to stay at a hotel at 5th street or south. Have a great time in WYO!!

  3. Thanks for the info Kate - I'll rethink our motel plans as we were looking for a place more on the north end. Any suggestions within our cheap budget?

  4. The Best Western is nice. Great location. On main street. just south of 5th and north of downtown area. I don't know of many local places to stay though. I guess I never actually stayed at a hotel in Sheridan. ;) Let me do a little reconnaissance. I'll get back to you asap.
