The final leg of our route from MIchigan to Maine

My husband, Marc, and I are embarking on a 65+ day bike powered journey across the Northern Tier of our great country. This is our first bike touring trip and we are going it alone - just the two of us, a tent and a credit card (well a few other essentials as well.)

I've created this blog to chronicle the ins and outs of our transcontinental bike tour along with highlights of the nation's best and worst slices of pie. Inspired by my love of the Food Network's travel shows...I've added the challenge of seeking out new and exciting flavors of pie. My goal - a different kind of pie every day and yes moon pie, pizza pie and anything else with a crust counts!

10 days til liftoff....packing it all up.

I've been thinking in terms of "lasts" lately. Last night I had my "last" happy hour with my girlfriends. Rode my "last" bike ride in Boulder on Tuesday. And finished the "last" of my work yesterday. Not that I won't be back in a few months to pick up where I left off, but a vacation of this magnitude changes everything. I know it will be life transforming and I look forward to a new routine and a new adventure everyday.

Marc packed our bags last night. It looked like a bike shop exploded on our kitchen table. I feel so fortunate that Marc is a bike genius - he can fix just about any problem that our bikes will have.

For those that are curious about the details -Here's our packing list:

Allen Wrench Set
Tire Levers
Air Pump
C02 Air Pump +5 CO2 Cartridges
Tire Patch Kit
Spare spokes
2 tubes/ 2 extra tires
Shifter cable/ Brake cable
Brake pads
Chain cleaner/lube
Spoke wrench
Duct tape
Nylon rope
Pocket knife
Kelty 2 person tent
2 sleep mats
2 silk sleepsheets
1 sleeping bag (we are hoping not to camp too often - we'll have fight over the bag)
Garmin GPS
Netbook
Phones
Headlamps
First Aid Kit
Sunscreen
Bike Locks
Solio (solar powered charger for Garmin and Phones) + extra phone battery
Compact Camera
Pepper Spray
Sunglasses
IPod
Clothing (see below)

We are also each bringing 2 sets of bike clothes - jerseys/shorts, biking tights and long sleeve jersey, wool hat, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of socks, rain jacket and pants, one pair of casual pants and shirt and one pair of sandals. Basically we'll be in the same clothes every night - but hey a new town every night so no one's the wiser!

We are taking the bikes to a local bike shop today for packing and then off to Fed Ex to ship everything to Seattle. That will be a pricey shipping bill! We tried bringing our bikes on the plane when we went to Hawaii - what a mess! Its very hard to maneuver an airport toting large boxes. And trying to find a cab - forget about it!
